Chapter 4: New Victory
“Our Player 419 is already in a crisis—”
He had only just spoken when Tyler executed a roll on the spot and got up, breaking out into the standard sprinting form as he bypassed the missiles flying at him and arrived before his opponent in moments.
The host exclaimed, “Oh my god, what kind of speed burst is this! Is he a carrier rocket?!”
At the moment Tyler was a meter away from his opponent, the Mage had already stopped his remote-controlled Arcane Storm. He quickly switched to using “Flicker” (short-distant teleportation spell), his figure then appeared fifteen meters away.
“Beautiful!” The host shouted, “What kind of reaction is this! At the same time our Assassin accelerated, our Mage was already doing his Flicker! This is simply magical—”
Before he could finish his commentary, he watched as Tyler use a “Shadow Jump” without pause and appeared from below the Mage’s shadow.
The host bore through the imaginary face slap he was given and promptly switched, “0.5 seconds! He caught up to him in just 0.5 seconds! This Assassin’s reaction speed is actually even faster than our Mage’s, this is truly an amazing scene!”
When Tyler showed himself from behind the mage, the first thing he did was to aim for the back of his head, knocking him into a short-term dizzy state. Then while he was dizzy, the short sword “Paean” in his right hand headed for the mage’s throat while the dagger “Silence” in his left hand stabbed toward his back.
After 1.5 seconds passed, the mage finally got out of his dizzy state but he was already afflicted with the “silent” status (unable to cast magic) and “bleeding” status (continuous loss of health points).
Host: “What an incomparably fast hand speed and hit rate! The assassin comboed three skills in the span of 1.5 seconds. My god, if you think about it, isn’t the CD (cooldown) of skills 0.5 seconds… could he be cheating?”
Tyler was not cheating, what he used weren’t skills, but technique.
The skills released by the system all had cooldowns of at least one second and higher; but the techniques he personally used, they could only be judged as within the boundaries of normal attacks, so there was no such thing as cooldowns.
But the result of these techniques could be summed up as all the experience Tyler accumulated as a veteran assassin, there was no way they were superficial in any way.
The mage was already alarmed to find out his health points was in the red (lower than 30%).
Host: “Red blood! We’re about to see the outcome of this battle! Our mage decisively used his last life-saving skill, ‘Magic Scapecrow’. It immediately clears him of all negative status ailments and escapes 15 meters away, leaving a scarecrow stand-in where he originally stands—”
In the next moment, the scarecrow stand-in suddenly exploded.
“The stand-in has exploded! What an uncommon counterattack magic!” The host excitedly shouted, “Our assassin is finally no longer at full health! He’s finally not at full health everyone!”
Audience: “……” Why do they feel so sad hearing that?
The Magic Scapecrow and Scapecrow Explosion both happened in a moment, there was simply no leeway to dodge it.
In that split-second, Tyler relied purely on battle instincts to jump back, using his arm to block the fatal damage. The health bar above his head dropped to… 97%.
Host: “…Damn, this assassin is simply impossible to beat. Is his nervous system made of quantum and reacts at the speed of light?”
He had just finished speaking when he suddenly accelerated again, nearing the mage who simply didn’t have the time to react.
The mage had used all his life-saving skills, the only skill not on cooldown was Arcane Storm. He could only grit his teeth and do a last stand… five missiles were fired off with a whoosh.
After that, there wasn’t an after.
“It’s another throat-slit! Damn he can hit that fatal weakpoint, just what kind of hit rate is this! What kind of hit rate is this everyone! One second… two seconds! The mage is about dead!” The host shouted, “And he’s dead! —Alas, he’s dead as expected! Victory and defeat has been decided.”
In the next second, the system declared victory for Tyler.
The mage turned into white light and flew away, back to the stage.
Tyler sheathed Paean and Silence then also flew up to the stage.
The host walked up to them, his shoes clicking on the floor, “Congratulation Player 419 for obtaining victory, may I ask if you two players have anything to say?”
The microphone was first passed on to the mage. The mage hesitated for a moment before speaking, “I feel… as if I’m being hunted.”
The host gently laughed, “The duels on the arena are always killing and be killed.
Mage: “……” Why don’t you try being hunted down by Player 419? Have you ever felt such despair yourself before?
In the end, he endured the urge and did not say it.
The microphone was then passed to Tyler.
The host has not even asked if he “want to say something?”.
Tyler was already a step ahead and said, “No.”
Host: “Our Player 419 still has nothing to say? But alas, our audiences are all very curious, just how did you use three skills in 1.5 seconds? That breaks the fixed skill usage speed of the system.”
Tyler: “Trade secret.”
The audience offstage had already started to yell one after another, discussions went on without end and the ladies were all screaming and whistling at Tyler.
The host winked and asked, “Oh dear, tell us handsome. Fifty thousand yuan for your trade secret, are you willing?”
Tyler: “Fifty thousand?”
Host: “That isn’t a small number, who knows if the higher-ups will reimburse me?”
Tyler: “It’s not a skill, it’s technique.”
Host: “Lord Fourth! You are my father! I will kneel to you in respect right now!”
After Tyler took the fifty thousand yuan and calmly walked away, the arena was still swept up in heated debates.
The difference between “Skill” and “Technique” was that the former was controlled and used by the system, the latter is the player freely controlling their own bodies and using abilities they have. The difference between them was huge, like the sky and ground.
For example, “Skills” were like carved printing blocks, the same blocks can be used by anyone, and the results are the same for everyone that uses it, only their hardware (Player attributes, equipment etc.) would influence the output. You just need to get “Skills” and for the rest of your life, you only need to give an order to the system and you will immediately get the same unchanging result.
“Techniques” were like a painting brush, the threshold was low with a high degree of freedom, everyone can try it. But some go at it at the speed of a dog crawl while others make famous masterpieces that are passed down through history. Even someone at the level of a great master, can become god while in good condition, but fall and lose their standing in a moment of carelessness.
The techniques that some people freely control and use might not have any usage at all, some might even hurt themselves instead. Some people have techniques that not only drew crowds but also have freedom in choosing their speed and target without cooldown time. They can break through the system limitations.
There were unlimited possibilities within it.
Generally speaking, world-class experts would concentrate on training one to two techniques that corresponded to them and can give them an advantage. Once they succeed, this skill will become their “Famous Ultimate”.
Because there was a lot of freedom, everyone’s technique have their own individual characteristics and were easy to recognize. Furthermore, because they were hard to train, hard to make and so on, a regular expert would only concentrate on one to two techniques.
The known expert with the most techniques was “Secretive Hand” Flander, the highest ranked assassin in E-Sports League. They have counted eight different techniques, and was well-known because of his “overly excessive techniques like a bottomless pit”.
That night, Tyler’s profile page was updated by the government.

The gifs below were still those two, they weren’t updated.
The comments at the very bottom continued to blow up:
“Lord Fourth, I also kneel to you!”
“My godly Lord Fourth, what is with that ‘No.’ under your quotes! [laughing and crying]
It was probably because the host had directly shortened his name “Player 419” and shouted it as ‘Lord Fourth’ when he was overly excited. The people online then joined the trend and started to call him ‘Lord Fourth’ as well.
“Lord Fourth is mighty and majestic! Lord Fourth is so cool that I can’t close my legs.”
“Lord Fourth, I want to give birth to a monkey for you!”
“Lord Fourth, I want to give birth to a flowering mountain for you!”
Tyler: “……” I really don’t understand you modern people.
Tyler felt as if he had done nothing substantial today. It was like he had finished sharpening his knife, took a nice bath, then cheerfully went out to PK. But the result was that he had kicked a small monster to death on the way out of his door, then cleaned up and went back home.
He had just gotten excited and it was over, he felt very unsatisfied.
However, in his past five hundred years, this kind of situation wasn’t rare. Ultimately, once someone’s skill level has already been trained until they were one of the very best, they would naturally start to lose the feeling of actually making an all-out effort and the loneliness from not being able to find many opponents.
But even so, it was something worth being happy for to the assassin.
He was different from these people that play games at home.
They fought as they pleased, showing off their cool, dazzling or romantic sides, earning themselves the cheers of the audience, even if they lost, it’s just a pat on the back and back home they go. The life he spent was one of steel and blood, over his tedious and cruel lifetime, he silently took care of his wounds, if he lost, then that would be the end of everything, a death without an intact corpse.
Now that Tyler has arrived to their world, this world was comparable to light, very friendly. Being able to break away from a life of slaughter and evil, to him, this was the best era to live in.
And no matter the world, Tyler Odin was doubtlessly strong.
The strong, are those who can undertake the worse fates and can still fit to the best honor and glory.
