Chapter 26: The Elegant Youngster That Destroys Common Sense

Mu Chen’s expression turned into a cold one. There was no doubt that he couldn’t allow his disciple to leave his sight. If he stopped looking after him, then there would be others that would lead him astray. If it weren’t for the two mischievous scoundrels named Jing Ming and Xiao Liu, his clever disciple would have never followed them in creating trouble.

“Jing Ming, go run one hundred laps around Lofty Cloudy Sect!”

“One hundred….” Jing Ming’s expression turned bitter and he sulkily pointed his finger at Gu Yunjue. “It was him… he… he….”

Gu Yunjue blinked with a blank expression on his face and he tilted his head in a foolish manner, “Ah?”

Jing Ming stared at Gu Yunjue’s tiny nose, small eyes, and his appearance that resembled a little bean for a while. He then stomped his feet and left panting with rage. He mumbled to himself as he left, “Lofty Cloud Sect is so big that it will take me two months to run one hundred laps around it. Young Master, you’ve changed. You didn’t treat me this way before. You must have found someone else to replace me from outside….”

Jing Ting lifted his leg and firmly kicked his younger brother’s bottom which sent him flying far away. He looked like a pouncing squirrel. The last time his brother took Gu Yunjue out, they got lost. This time, he went past the limits by stealing fish. His younger brother was truly retarded.

Gu Yunjue tugged on Mu Chen’s sleeves, enamored by the light flush on Mu Chen’s pale face from anger. Gu Yunjue felt that he had become a devil ever since he realized his feelings for Mu Chen. He wanted to possess Mu Chen’s line of sight at all times. Even the slightest sign of expression from Mu Chen could send his heart racing.

Even though Gu Yunjue’s body was at its youthful stage, he didn’t feel any anxiety. He had plenty of time to break down his Master and capture him in the snare of love he’d weave.

Mu Chen noticed the self-satisfied smirk on Gu Yunjue’s face. He felt annoyed by this so he picked Gu Yunjue up and spanked his bottom. This little scoundrel had the audacity to laugh at his playmate’s bad luck. He couldn’t entertain this type of behavior!

Mu Chen hadn’t expected that in their past, the next ten years were when his disciple had left his sight and was easily “instigated” by other scoundrels to create trouble. This made Mu Chen want to be careful in educating Gu Yunjue. Therefore, he wanted to keep Gu Yunjue at his side during all times.

For many cultivators, these ten years would flash by quickly. However, Mu Chen felt as if these ten years were vital compared to the hundred years of his past.

As his disciple got older, the more tricky he became. Was that type of behavior acceptable?

  ————

After ten years had passed, it became time for another disciple acceptance ceremony. Lofty  Cloud Sect thus opened their doors to accept more disciples. The disciples from the outside had already passed their trials and were taken away. There were only about ten disciples from inside the sect who were waiting in the main hall for their assignments from the sect master.

There were six palace masters seated in a row. Yu Mingze was sitting proudly with a cold expression on his face. Duan Mufeng was tilting his head lazily while dozing off. Mo Jinyang and Bai Zunrong were huddled together as they chatted. Liu Zhanzhi occupied the sixth seat and held a sword in his hands with murderous intent. The fifth seat was empty.

Mo Jinyang inspected the youngsters before saying to Bai Xunrong, “This year’s disciples have high aptitudes. Among them, there’s a mutated ice spirit root with an aptitude that won’t lose against Fu Haolong.”

Fu Haolong was a young man who had the heavenly thunder spirit that passed the last entrance trials. He was now 26 years old and had entered the early core formation stage. He was considered a genius among the entire immortal realm.

“Unfortunately, they’re not as good as Junior Disciple Gu.” Bai Xunrong sounded envious. If she could find a disciple with talent like Gu Yunjue, then it would be a dream to her. Martial Uncle had impressive foresight to pick out that talented young boy early. Outside the sect, there were rumors that Gu Yunjue’s talents improved as a result of Mu Chen’s medicinal pills. However this theory didn’t make sense based on the people Gu Yunjue fought and won against.

Mo Jinyang retorted back, “You shouldn’t be thinking about that demonic sort of aptitude.” Gu Yunjue would turn sixteen in two months but he already reached the middle core formation stage. This genius had already broken the record of the immortal realm’s past thousand years. There was nobody who could compete with him. If this wasn’t demonic, then what was it?

As they spoke, there was some disturbance outside the door. They heard the sound of a young man’s sonorous and gentle laugh. “Sorry for creating an inconvenience to you all. There was something that delayed me so I came here late.”

As the voice rang out, everyone turned their attention towards the entrance. They saw a youth of about sixteen or seventeen years old step into the main hall. He was tall and had a refined expression that could be compared to the March spring breeze. The youth wore fine clothes the color of snow and carried a jade delegation pendant at his waist. His hand held a long black sword with a tiny seven treasure gold plated pagoda hanging off it. Even though this person was not carrying many ornaments, the few that he had made it clear that he wasn’t someone ordinary.

“Master is busy today so he had me come in his place. I’ve made Senior Brothers wait too long.” Gu Yunjue said all this humbly. Beneath his sharp eyebrows, there was a pair of peach blossom eyes that had a seductive expression in them. From him, a radiance flowed with the oppressive aura of an immortal. The vermillion tear-shaped birthmark near his eye had grown as he had and now improved his appearance.

Bai Xunrong lifted her head and gave a deep sigh, “In a few years, my disciples at Xiuyang Palace might replace Martial Uncle Mu’s portraits with Junior Disciple Gu’s portraits?”

It was right at this moment that Duan Mufeng drowsily lifted his chin before saying, “Doesn’t Martial Uncle have a better looking smile than Junior Disciple Gu, Junior Disciples?”

Liu Hanzhi lifted an eyebrow at his words and the two of them had a staring contest. Neither was willing to back down.

Bai Xunrong interrupted the staring contest by waving her hand and candidly saying, “Martial Uncle is too aloof. Girls would prefer Junior Disciple Gu who is gentle and can understand others feelings. Do you get it now?”

Duan Mufeng gave a click of his tongue when he heard  Bai Xunrong call Gu Yunjue gentle and understanding of others. Duan Mufeng seemed to have recalled something as the corners of his mouth lifted upwards.

Yue Mingze released a cough to signal them not to have this type of conversation at this moment. Only the new disciples wouldn’t be able to hear this conversation. However, there was no excuse for anyone at a higher cultivation stage not to hear it.

Gu Yunjue pretended not to have heard the conversation and settled down in the fifth seat. The ten year old youths couldn’t tell how far this man’s cultivation was compared to the others near to him but his aura fascinated them. They began to plot while the seated elders were shocked.

Gu Yunjue was calm and collected as he analyzed everyone’s expressions. He wondered to himself what Master was doing. The symptoms of fire poison couldn’t be suppressed anymore so Master was meditating for the past few months. He let Gu Yunjue manage Yanyang Palace. This worried Gu Yunjue to the point where he didn’t want to leave his Master’s side.

Yue Mingze interrupted Gu Yunjue’s thoughts and gently asked, “Junior Disciple Gu, does Martial Uncle Mu not have any intention to accept another disciple?”

Everyone’s gazes focused on Gu Yunjue once this was asked. If Mu Chen wanted someone in particular, the other elders would be unable to fight him for that child. The ten youths all looked at him with an intense expectant gaze. Gu Yunjue was only a few years older than them but sat at a seat that was the same level as the other elders. If that man’s Master accepted one of them, then that person would become a Junior Disciple of the Sect Master.

Gu Yunjue laughed with an indifferent expression before saying, “Master does not have any intention to accept another disciple. I only came out to join the ceremony. Senior Brothers and Sect Master, please do as you all wish.”

The youngsters were disappointed while the elders in the hall relaxed. Yue Mingze didn’t carry any expressions on his face and asked the Junior Disciples a question. Duan Mu Feng picked a disciple that had water wood double spirit roots. Yue Mingze gave the disciple with ice spirit roots to Liu Hanzhi but he didn’t want it. Thus, he took that disciple for himself. The remaining disciples had aptitudes that were inferior to these chosen disciples. The twelve palace halls took five of the disciples, the thirty-six peaks took the other five, and the last three entered the seventy-two cave.

Gu Yunjue squinted his eyes and silently watched the scene unfolding in front of him. From the last ten years, Yue Mingze had improved in handling affairs. He now had the authority to take disciples in the inner sect. Through this act of distributing disciples, one could see how the outer sects were suppressed.

Once the general assembly was adjourned, Gu Yunjue hurried to return back. It was right at this moment that a palace hall master stopped him, “Junior Disciple Gu, will you stay back for a moment?”

Gu Yunjue paused and immediately recognized the other. In the twelve palaces, there were both the strong and the weak. The palace hall master that called him used to be Mu Chen’s eldest senior Martial Brother from the other sect. His name was Zheng Xuansu. He was ranked third among the twelve palaces. Gu Yunjue was confused why the other called him. He gave a slight smile out of courtesy but maintained some distance as he inspected the other. “I’m not sure why you’re looking for me so can you explain that to me?”

The other slightly waved a folding fan in their hand. He looked just like a gentle scholar. “I heard your Master has been unwell these past few days. Is that true?”

Gu Yunjue narrowed his eyes and murderous intentions briefly appeared in them.

It was at this moment that Mu Chen opened his eyes in the middle of meditation. His complexion was pale. Mu Chen had always strived to suppress the fire poison he had to prevent Gu Yunjue from worrying about him. However, it seemed that he was unable to suppress it anymore.

i have a question about the succession hierarchy in a sect. hypothetically, if a vengeful cultivator killed the sect leader and their personal succeeding disciple, would the position of sect leader fall on the most senior of the sect leader’s normal disciples? or would it fall to the second elder?
    thanks for the chapter
