Chapter 31: It Was For Her
Ruan Yesheng didn’t expect Xi Mo to be so attentive. The tone she used to exhort her earlier was also so gentle, Xi Mo obviously cared for her. In her joy, Ruan Yesheng’s heart felt soft like melted sugar and she stared straight at Xi Mo.
Ruan Yesheng wasn’t speaking but her eyes were so fawning it looked as if it could condense out droplets of water and every drop of water seemed to contain a thousand words.
Xi Mo looked away slightly after being stared at with those eyes, seemingly feeling a little uncomfortable. She turned around with a sullen face and walked towards the lift.
Ruan Yesheng laughed in her heart. She hurriedly chased after Xi Mo and walked with her shoulder to shoulder. Because she was feeling happy, the hotel passageway which she was long tired of seeing became wonderful scenery everywhere.
“你关心我。”电梯里就她们两个人, 阮夜笙毫不避讳, 笑盈盈说。
“You care about me.” There were only two of them in the lift. Ruan Yesheng didn’t have to hide at all and said with a smile.
奚墨真是这辈子没见过这么样不知矜持为何物的, 不由冷道：“别误会。我是怕你头发没干，一不小心感冒了发起烧来, 如果烧坏了脑子, 到时候就算身体换回来也还是我倒霉。”
In Xi Mo’s life, she had never seen anyone lacking so much knowledge in the concept called restrain. She couldn’t help but said coldly, “Do not misunderstand. I’m just afraid that if you don’t dry your hair, you might catch a cold and get a fever. If the fever fried your brain, it would be me who is unlucky when we exchange our bodies back.”
Ruan Yesheng was still saying: “You care about me.”
Xi Mo: “…”
Are you even listening!
She originally thought that Ruan Yesheng would definitely argue back like she always did in the past and was mentally prepared. According to her many years of experience—A Ruan Yesheng that doesn’t shoot back wasn’t Ruan Yesheng.
阮夜笙拨弄了下半干的长发, 轻轻说：“其实我心里并不想真的和你斗嘴，你就当我嘴贱吧。如果有一天, 我不会再和你斗嘴, 那就好了。”
Ruan Yesheng fiddled with her half-dry long hair and said softly, “In my heart, I don’t actually want to fight with you. Just take it that I’m always speaking without thinking. It would be great if I learned not to quarrel with you again one day.”
Her voice was as light as a gentle breeze, and the look she sent over was soft like petals. It seems as if this sentence will drift away the next moment like flowers in the wind, as if it never existed within this closed lift.
Xi Mo was slightly startled. Hearing a ‘ding’, the lift door opened.
They reached their floor and the two of them walked out one after another. Xi Mo said, “I will wait for you here.”
Ruan Yesheng saw that she had already said so like this, so she didn’t invite her again. Leaving behind a “I’ll be back soon”, Ruan Yesheng returned back to her room to dry her hair.
Ruan Yesheng quickly got out after packing her bag for fear of keeping Xi Mo waiting for too long. For afar, she saw Xi Mo standing by the lift. Beside her stood Gu Qisong who looked like a wooden stake poking from the ground. The two of them were standing some distance apart. One was cold and noble and the other was like a sealed gourd, both of them had personalities which didn’t like to speak. They probably didn’t communicate much and just stood there like this.
Ruan Yesheng gave Xi Mo a glance and said to Gu Qisong, “Gu Qisong, are you looking for me for something?”
Gu Qisong said, “Xiao Mo, Mr. Lu heard that you had an appointment with Miss Ruan for dinner and asked me to protect the two of you.”
Xi Mo, who was standing at the side, had a gloomy expression as if struck by thunder: “…”
No one has ever called her that before in her entire life, not to mention a bodyguard who came out of nowhere just recently. Even if her identity is currently being replaced by Ruan Yesheng, Ruan Yesheng and this bodyguard are not so close to the point of using such kind of addressing.
Xi Mo slowly asked Gu Qisong word by word, “Mr. Gu, what did you call her just now?”
“Xiao Mo.” Gu Qisong was a wooden club who didn’t know how to read people’s mood. Currently, his IQ electricity got cut and he hasn’t paid the fees for his EQ as he replied with a face full of righteousness.
Ruan Yesheng quickly pulled Xi Mo aside and whispered, “I’ve joked with him previously asking him to address me that way. I didn’t expect that he would treat it seriously. We probably can’t change it back anymore.”
“Frankly explain, how many pits have you dug for me.” Xi Mo said.
“There truly isn’t much. I was really joking at that time. I didn’t know that he was so serious and took it all seriously. There won’t be a next time.” Ruan Yesheng pursed her lips and lowered her head slightly, only lifting a pair of eyes to look over cautiously. In the past, the lipsticks Xi Mo applied were all lighter in colour and more elegant in nature. The lipstick Ruan Yesheng was using now was more charming in nature. When she pursed her lips, it brought out a small nibbling amount of moisture, making her look more pitiful.
Xi Mo stared at Ruan Yesheng. After staring for a while, her face was still sullen, but it was gradually becoming more relaxed. After a while, she calmed down and whispered, “Can’t you make him change the way he addresses you? I get goosebumps whenever I hear it.”
If she and Ruan Yesheng switched back their bodies afterwards and she had to listen to this iron tower-like bodyguard use such a wooden club-like tone to call her ‘Xiao Mo’… The voice is so beautiful that she dares not listen.
Ruan Yesheng also whispered, “I can’t. He is… quite a stubborn person.”
It seemed that this matter was firmly established and couldn’t be changed. Xi Mo had no choice but to endure it in silence.
Ruan Yesheng looked down at her watch, then looked at Gu Qisong, “Have you had dinner?”
Gu Qisong said, “I have eaten, Xiao Mo.”
Xi Mo: “…”
Ruan Yesheng told Gu Qisong, “Ruan Yesheng and I will be having dinner together later, you don’t have to follow. We’ll be eating at the hotel restaurant and won’t be going out. Nothing will happen. You tell Lu Qingming to not be too nervous every day. I feel tired seeing him like that. It’s also inconvenient for me if you follow me like this everyday.”
Gu Qisong didn’t answer her request right away. Instead, he said seriously, “Xiao Mo, please wait a moment.”
Xi Mo: “…”
Even when he was addressing Ruan Yesheng with a nickname level form of address called “Xiao Mo”, Gu Qisong had done so very stiffly without any fluctuation in his tone. It is so miserable that Xi Mo couldn’t bear to listen. As Xi Mo listened, she felt as if she was subjected to Lingchi.
Gu Qisong sent a few WeChat messages, and after getting a reply, he nodded to Ruan Yesheng.
Ruan Yesheng immediately relaxed. Giving Xi Mo a meaningful glance, the two of them entered the lift and let the door close, keeping Gu Qisong outside.
They soon reached the reserved room. Since there were only the two of them and the table in the room was huge, the two of them sat closely together at one corner. Xi Mo placed the bag of fruits on another chair without saying anything.
The dishes came quickly. There were three hot vegetable dishes, one cold dish, and one soup.
Ruan Yesheng ate in silence.
Xi Mo also ate in silence.
The atmosphere is a bit profound.
Ruan Yesheng quietly looked at Xi Mo from the corner of her eye while eating. Xi Mo chewed slowly while she ate and her body was upright. She always gave off the feeling of being well-educated. Even though their body was now exchanged, that kind of temperament is still naturally revealed, as if this nobleness is innate. She has a deep family background spanning across business and politics. Ruan Yesheng has also heard that while Xi Mo’s father doted on her, he was also very strict with her. She may have been taught “do not speak while eating” when she was young, for her dining etiquette is too good. As a result, every time Ruan Yesheng ate with her, it felt a little cheerless.
Even though it was cheerless, Ruan Yesheng still felt happy looking at her.
Occasionally though, she wished that Xi Mo would be a little more free when she was alone with her and don’t have to uphold those particular etiquettes. If Xi Mo is no longer so particular about how she acts before her and is more relaxed, does that mean that the tree at the bottom of Ruan Yesheng heart that was carefully hidden by her has a chance to bloom?
As Ruan Yesheng thought about this, the mouthful of dish she scooped up was held midair without a chance to enter her mouth. The corner of her lips arc up into a helpless smile.
In the past, she probably never thought that they would ever have an outcome and didn’t even dared to think about it at all, so Ruan Yesheng was more casual and dared to say anything.
She dared to think a little about it now, but she also began to feel uneasy.
In the past, she always wore a smiling mask, so she wasn’t afraid of anything. The moment she chooses to fully immerse herself in it, if the ending isn’t as good as she hopes and causes her to be hurt and sad, would she have to put on her mask again to lick her own wounds? Since then, her sense of security has disappeared little by little. As she walks alone on her lonely path, she would wear her mask and carefully protect that little spark of fire known as hope and can’t let it extinguish.
Thinking of this, Ruan Yesheng smiled somewhat self-deprecatingly.
That is very far away.
Maybe she shouldn’t think so far.
Her mood went up and down as she remained in this contemplative state of thought for a long time. That mouthful of dish was still hanging in the air without being swallowed.
Xi Mo looked at her from the side for a while and finally couldn’t take it. Tossing aside her god damn family upbringing of “do not speak while eating”, she said faintly, “Is that dish so fragrant? You have been smelling it for so long.”
Ruan Yesheng: “…”
She quickly ate that mouthful of dish. As she thought about the fact that Xi Mo might have been staring at her earlier, she immediately felt embarrassed as if her thoughts had been seen through. But this embarrassment is fleeting for she is always good at disguising herself. Her eyes bent into a smile as she said, “I know that you have OCD. You feel uncomfortable seeing others hold up their dish and not eat it for a long time.”
“Shut up.” Xi Mo glanced at her.
Ruan Yesheng picked up another mouthful of vegetable with her chopsticks again and held it near her mouth while holding it above her bowl. However, she just wouldn’t open her mouth to eat it as she stared at Xi Mo.
“Don’t be childish.” Xi Mo said, “Quickly eat.”
Ruan Yesheng just wouldn’t eat it and purposely evoked Xi Mo’s OCD.
Xi Mo knew that she was deliberately messing around and sneered, “Then I will feed you.”
As she said so, she started leaning over. Ruan Yesheng didn’t expect that Xi Mo would ignore the etiquette and play the game with her as Xi Mo usually cared for the dining etiquette a lot and always sat upright and elegantly. Ruan Yesheng was caught off guard and stuffed the mouthful of vegetables directly into her mouth from the shock. She barely chewed on the vegetables before swallowing it all down in confusion.
Ruan Yesheng: “…”
Xi Mo also didn’t expect that she would swallow her food so embarrassedly. She quickly stood up to pour a cup of water and passed it to Ruan Yesheng.
Ruan Yesheng widened her eyes and looked at her.
Xi Mo motioned for her to drink the water and said softly, “Did you choke on the food?”
A strange blush appeared on Ruan Yesheng’s face. After calming down, she received the water from Xi Mo and took a sip.
Xi Mo seemed to have relaxed after seeing that she didn’t choke on her food. She sat back down on her chair and continued to uphold her table manners. However, she said, “Why are you eating so fast? Are you acting as a cow eating grass?”
Ruan Yesheng finished drinking her water. As she thought about the fact that Xi Mo was actually talking to her while she was eating and was even joking a little, her mood became as profound as the blush on her face. She covered it up and pretended to admit generously “That’s right. But you also specially fed the cow water. Don’t tell me you’re raising this cow? You’re raising me?”
Xi Mo answered back sarcastically, “You are holding my card now, am I not raising you?”
Ruan Yesheng: “…”
Xi Mo also paused. Seeing Ruan Yesheng stunned, Xi Mo thought that she had misunderstood. After all, Ruan Yesheng always had high self-esteem. She always minded it when she had to use Xi Mo’s card. However, they had a special circumstance and Ruan Yesheng’s income wasn’t enough to afford Xi Mo’s empress-grade consumption. Just the cost of daily maintenance alone is staggeringly expensive. Ruan Yesheng had no choice but to use the card Xi Mo had left behind for her previously. She had quietly planned to return Xi Mo the money after earning money in the future.
Xi Mo felt a little awkward. She said with a lowered voice, “That’s not what I meant. What I meant is that my card is used to raise my body. This is normal. You’re now using my body, so it’s normal for me to raise you too. Don’t misunderstand.”
Ruan Yesheng knows Xi Mo’s character well. Although she is indifferent and proud, she would never really hurt a person’s self-esteem. How was it possible for Ruan Yesheng to misunderstand? She was merely shocked by the ambiguous words ‘raising you’ said by Xi Mo—Even if Xi Mo didn’t mean it that way.
Ruan Yesheng felt like laughing more now that Xi Mo was explaining to her so stiffly like this. She said with a smile, “I know. I’m very happy that you’re ‘raising me’. You don’t have to worry that I might misunderstand.”
Xi Mo didn’t answer again but her expression seemed to have relaxed.
Nearing the end of their meal, Ruan Yesheng didn’t pay attention to where she placed her hands and accidentally touched her knees, causing her to frown from the pain. It took a while for it to get better. She held up the cup of water to drink again.
Xi Mo saw her expression and also frowned. She said abruptly, “Have you applied any ointment?”
Of course she was referring to the knees. After kneeling so many times, it was needless to say that it hurts.
Ruan Yesheng understood her question and shook her head, her smile naturally appearing. “No, I thought it was okay.”
Ding Pei was nervous and resulted in many reshoots before. She knelt back and forth too many times, causing bruises to form on her knees. She was too busy during the day, and the pain from this kind of bruise always came slowly. It wasn’t obvious before, so she didn’t care too much. After they got off work, she kept thinking about the dinner she was going to have with Xi Mo at night, so she didn’t apply any ointment either. Now that the pain has come, it hurts a lot even if she was only giving it a light touch.
Xi Mo stood up and walked to the free chair next to her. She flipped through the big bag of fruits and pulled out a small plastic bag.
She did not say what the small plastic bag contained and just handed it to Ruan Yesheng.
Ruan Yesheng received the bag and took a look inside to find a small bottle of medicinal oil for promoting blood circulation and clearing blood clots. Judging from the name printed on the bag, it belongs to the drugstore chain outside the hotel. Ruan Yesheng remembered that the drugstore was very close to the fruit store that Xi Mo entered afterwards. It should have been bought when Xi Mo was wandering outside.
Ruan Yesheng stared at the bottle of medicinal oil for a long time and the smile in her eyes was almost overflowing out.
She didn’t know why Xi Mo went to the fruit store, nor what Xi Mo did in the fruit store, but she at least knew why Xi Mo went to the drugstore.
It was for her.
Or rather, it was for her knees.
